As a native speaker of English, I tend to use lots of idioms because they simply add flavour to conversations!
Apple of someone’s eye
To adore someone.
My daughter is the apple of my eye.
Big cheese
A very important person (VIP)
It is always important to talk to the big cheese of the company.
Bread and butter
- The essentials
Can you simply explain the bread and butter of your presentation.
Eat like a pig
- When someone eats too much and greedily
Stop eating like a pig!
Have a bun in the oven.
- To be pregnant.
I don’t think I can jog anymore because I have a bun in the oven.
Piece of cake
- Something that is easy and simple.
The exam was a piece of cake.
Bring home the bacon
- Earn the income
I am the only person in my family who brings home the bacon.
Don’t cry over spilled milk
- Do not get upset over something that cannot be changed
You missed your train. Don’t cry over spilled milk.
Not my cup of tea
- Something you don’t particularly like
Extreme sports are not my cup of tea.
